Why do carriage bolts have a square neck?
The simple answer is that carriage bolts, also known as coach bolts, feature a square neck directly beneath the domed head to provide a locking mechanism when installed.
This square section directly below the smooth domed head sits within a square recess within the material and prevents the bolt from rotating when tightened. The square neck embeds itself into the materials surface creating a secure hold.
The square neck is especially effective in wooden applications, where it bites into the material, ensuring the bolt remains stationary while the nut is tightened.
This feature makes carriage bolts / coach bolts an excellent choice for applications requiring a flush, tamper-resistant finish on one side, such as in fencing, decking, and furniture assembly.
