Jubilee Clips

Jubilee clips are a household name across the country but where do they originated, why are they called Jubilee clips, and what are they used for?

Let us start with what is a Jubilee clip?

Some might think it is an odd name for what is a circular band fastener. The Jubilee clip, also known as a Jubilee hose clip, is essentially a band of metal which is usually the same width but varies in length to allow for a variety of sizes.

This band of flexible metal has a series of groves along its length which allows the drive, fixed to the band, to pull the band of metal through the drive which increases or reduces the diameter and clamps the material to the surface of the item being used.

The drive is known as a worm drive and by using a screwdriver it can be tightened or loosened. This tightening action draws the band of metal through the drive which decreases or increases the diameter of the band of metal. This allows for the Jubilee clip to be tightened and untightened easily. This simple action allows for straightforward application and removal of the clip. When tightening and securing such items as rubber hose, the Jubilee clip should not be over tightened as this might damage the hose itself.

Where did the name Jubilee clip originate from?

Records show that commander Lumley Robinson patented the worm drive hose clip which he then named ‘Jubilee Clip.’ There does not seem to be any information regards why he called in a Jubilee clip, but the name has stuck and remains a well-known registered trademark and a household name across the country.

What are Jubilee clips used for?

Jubilee clips are extremely easy to install and remove using a standard flat ended screwdriver and this sees them widely used across many applications. They are primarily used for securing soft pliable hose on to a ridged circular surface like a pipe. Being used to secure hose pipe to the connector on a water source is probably the most common use for these clips, but they are also used for air, fluid, gas, and steam lines. A versatile and well used fastener.
